Why University Essay 怎麼研究學校才能寫出 fit：80/20 法則與三層具體性
每年 11 月我和學生一對一改文書時，最痛苦的時段是看 Why X University 草稿。
不是難，是爛得太一致。
“I am drawn to [School Name] because of its diverse student body, prestigious faculty, and beautiful campus. I believe that [School] will provide me with the perfect environment to grow academically and personally.”
把上面這段裡的 [School Name] 換成 Harvard / Yale / Princeton / Stanford / Duke / Northwestern / 任何一所——完全可以用。這就是 Why X 文書的死亡標誌：可互換性（fungibility）。
Adcom 在 Why X 文書上的判斷邏輯很簡單：「這篇文書能不能換成另一所學校還成立？」如果能，這篇 essay 不存在。Why X 不是寫給學校看的情書，是寫給 adcom 看的「你做了多少 homework」報告。本文用我 15 年實戰經驗，拆解這篇文書怎麼研究、怎麼寫、怎麼讓 adcom 信你真的研究過這所學校。
一、Why X 是 supplement 裡最高死亡率的一篇
來看一下我整理的 Top 30 大學裡 Why X 出現頻率：

幾乎每所 Top 30 都會問 Why X。這意味著如果你申請 12 所大學，你會寫 10-12 篇 Why X——每一篇都不能互換、每一篇都必須具體。
這就是為什麼 Common App 開放後 8 月、9 月、10 月的工作量比 11 月還重——Why X 的研究時間遠超寫作時間。
二、80/20 法則：80% 的 Why X 文書都是垃圾
15 年我看過的 Why X 樣本超過 3,000 篇。80% 寫得很爛。
爛的常見特徵：

只要你的 Why X 裡有以上任一個短語，這篇就在 80% 的爛文書裡面。
爛 Why X 的最大問題不是「寫不好」，是沒有研究。adcom 看完 30 秒就知道：這個學生 連學校官網都沒翻過。
三、三層具體性：每篇 Why X 必須有的 3 件事
我給每位學生 Why X 文書的硬性檢查標準是 三層具體性（Three-Layer Specificity）：

三層都必須出現。少一層，文書品質就降一級。
為什麼是三層？

我帶過的小 L，2023 年申請 UPenn Wharton。第一稿她寫了 4 個課程、3 個教授——層 1 滿分，但完全沒提社團或文化。我退稿叫她加 Wharton 投資社團（Penn Investment Alliance）+ Penn 的 “One University” 政策（學生可選 12 學院的課）。重寫之後她拿到 admit。
四、怎麼挖出三層具體性：研究 SOP
研究一所學校的 Why X，要花多少時間？我給學生的答案：每所至少 4-6 小時。
研究步驟（SOP for Why X）：

地雷：很多學生用 ChatGPT 問「Why CMU 該寫什麼」——這是死路。LLM 給的都是 generic「CMU has strong CS」——這正是 80% 爛文書的來源。
研究 SOP 沒有捷徑。我帶 Dr. G. 學生時，會直接給一份「Why X 研究單」當 homework——學生必須填 5 個課程、3 個教授、2 個 club、1 個 unique program、3 個校友——填完才能開始寫。
五、層 1：怎麼找你 major 的「對」課程
不是隨便挑一門課就行。挑課的標準：

好：
Stanford’s CS 154 “Introduction to Automata and Complexity Theory” with Prof. Omer Reingold would let me return to the question I gave up on in 11th grade: why undecidable problems exist. Stanford’s CS 254N (Computational Complexity) is the only undergraduate complexity-focused sequence in the country.
差別：好版本給的是課號 + 教授 + 為什麼這個課重要 + 為什麼這所學校特殊。一氣呵成。
六、層 2：怎麼找「對」的社團 / 傳統
每所頂校都有 200-500 個 student org。怎麼挑？

I followed YPU’s livestream during the 2024 election cycle and want to argue from the Liberal Party bench.
差別：好版本給的是組織歷史 + 運作方式 + 你已經追蹤過 + 具體立場。Adcom 立刻信你不是 last-minute 寫的。
有「傳統」加分的學校

提傳統時，注意：不是觀光客看一次就提——要寫出你為什麼期待參與。
七、層 3：怎麼抓「氣質」
最難的是層 3——一所學校的獨特氣質。

抓氣質的方法：讀該校學生寫的文章（校報專欄、Medium、Reddit r/[SchoolName]）。不要讀官網——官網都是 PR 語言。
例如 CMU 學生最常自嘲的一句是「CMU is where suffering builds character」——這是 adcom 自己也知道的內梗。如果你 Why CMU 裡引用這個（並反轉成正面），adcom 會微笑。
八、CMU Why X 完整範例（300 字）
來看一個完整的 Why CMU SCS 範例——三層具體性齊全。
When I told my AP CS teacher I wanted to take a class on imperative programming that wasn’t “just Python,” she laughed and said, “Then you want CMU’s 15-122.” >She was right. CMU SCS’s 15-122 Principles of Imperative Computation, taught by Frank Pfenning, is the only undergraduate course in the U.S. that pairs C0 (a Pfenning-designed subset of C) with contract-based proof requirements—exactly the bridge I need between writing code that “works” and writing code I can prove works. >But I’m not coming to CMU only for 15-122. The Quizbowl team’s 2023 HSNCT showing convinced me CMU’s “we’ll outwork you” culture extends past CS—I want to argue category strategy with the same people who debug 15-213 at 2 AM. I want to walk past The Fence at 3 AM and add a layer of paint over whatever last night’s group put up, because that’s CMU’s quiet brag: it never sleeps, but it also never takes itself too seriously. >“My heart’s in the work” isn’t a Carnegie quote on the brochure—it’s why, after 15-251 ends, the same students start ResearchTalks the next morning. I want to be in that room. >CMU is the only school where I can pursue formal proofs (under Prof. Robert Harper), competitive Quizbowl, and 3 AM Fence painting—as three expressions of the same instinct.
拆解三層：
- 層 1（學術）：15-122 + Frank Pfenning + C0 + 15-251 + Robert Harper
- 層 2（社團）：Quizbowl HSNCT 2023 + The Fence 傳統
- 層 3（氣質）：「we’ll outwork you」+ “My heart’s in the work” 的內梗 + 「never sleeps but never takes itself too seriously」
300 字，每一句都不能換成其他學校。
九、Anti-Example：Stanford 爛開頭與好開頭
Stanford 是公認最難寫 Why 的學校——因為它的 prompt 是「What excites you about Stanford?」極度抽象。
爛開頭
Stanford is my dream school because of its beautiful campus, world-class faculty, and entrepreneurial spirit. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford offers endless opportunities for innovation.
問題：
- “beautiful campus” → 觀光客
- “world-class faculty” → 沒名字
- “entrepreneurial spirit” → 換 NYU、USC、Babson 都成立
- “heart of Silicon Valley” → Stanford 不需要你介紹自己
好開頭
I want to take CS 197 Independent Study under Prof. Chris Manning during winter quarter—not because of his NLP fame, but because his office hours are the only ones I’ve found scheduled on Sundays. That tells me what I need to know about Stanford: it doesn’t quit when the work isn’t done.
好在哪：
- 課號 + 教授名 ✓
- 具體事實（週日 office hours）
- 從這個事實推導出對學校氣質的解讀
- 完全不能換成另一所學校（Manning 在 Stanford）
十、不要寫的 5 件事
無論哪所學校，Why X 都不要寫以下 5 件事：

最後一點要強調——千萬不要在 Why X 裡列校友。我看過學生寫 “Harvard has produced 8 U.S. presidents…”——這是 adcom 知道的事，你重複只是 padding。
十一、字數短（100-200 字）的 Why X 怎麼寫
UPenn、Tufts、Penn State、Vanderbilt 等很多學校的 Why X 只給 100-200 字。這比 650 字更難寫。
短版 Why X 的結構：

Penn’s One University policy lets undergraduates cross-register at all 12 schools without dean approval—a structural quirk that matters because my interests sit at the seam between Wharton’s Behavioral Economics (Prof. Maurice Schweitzer’s negotiation research) and SAS’s Cognitive Science. At my high school, I couldn’t take AP Psych and AP Economics in the same semester due to schedule conflicts. Penn is engineered against exactly this kind of friction. After freshman year, I want to apply to the Huntsman Program in International Studies & Business—Penn’s only dual-degree designed for students who refuse to choose between commerce and culture.
短版 Why X 的訣竅：只挑 1 個核心 anchor + 用整篇文書深入它。不要試圖塞 5 個 thing。
十二、結語：Why X 是耐心的測試
15 年實戰下來，我給每位學生 Why X 的最後一條建議：
Why X 不是寫作測試，是耐心測試。
寫得好的 Why X 不靠才情，靠研究時數。8 月開始研究、做筆記、和顧問腦力激盪、寫初稿、改 4 輪——這個過程沒有捷徑。
而 80% 的學生會偷懶，所以 80% 的 Why X 寫得爛——這也意味著只要你願意花時間做 SOP，你就贏了 80% 的競爭者。Why X 是補充文書裡 ROI 最高的一篇——投入 6 小時研究，回報是一所頂校的 admit。
最後一個觀察：Why X 寫不好的學生，通常也不適合那所學校。如果你研究了 4 小時還找不到 3 個你真心想去的理由，那這所學校可能根本不是你的 fit——這時候請回頭看選校清單，而不是硬寫。
Why X 是雙向確認——學校在確認你，你也在確認學校。寫不出來，就是答案。
